The WAKE UP Arizona Video Premiere was set for Saturday Night at the MADCAP Theatre. Jon Jenkins set up and organized the whole event for our Arizona scene (he even rented the theatre out of his own pocket – so be sure to thank him next time you see him). Jon has been working hard all year on his project, we’re really proud of him, and saturday night was his night. I headed down early with Awall to make sure everything was running smooth for Jon. Jon said the vid looked good on on the screen, the sound was dialed, everything was set. So, after we knew everything was alright, we met up with DJ and Dustin Latimer at RA Sushi on Mill Ave.

After chilling with D and company at RA, Joey Chase, Matty Schrock, Brent Henderson, and Kellan Zinkgraf rolled in. Zink came up with the term “trashy” to describe his skating style. For example, during filming with Jon for WAKEUP, you’d say “that trick was really sick Kellan, but can you make it more trashy?” He would then know what he needed to do. Anyways, we’ve been using that term for everything lately. We decided these guys were a little too “trashy” for an upscale place like RA Sushi, so we decided to move onto a local favorite – “The Tavern.” Walking into the Tavern, we learned that Joey’s ID looks like it’s 10 years old and that a dog chewed it up. After about 10 minutes, they finally let him in. My phone was ringing off the hook, I directed everyone to come meet up with us. We kicked it, had a good time, and waited anxiously until 8:45 PM to start heading down to the MADCAP Theatre for the WAKE UP Premiere.

We are very happy for Jon, he’s worked hard all year on his project. Arizona skaters started gathering outside the theatre, everyone was excited. Premieres, especially something like this one, are really good for your scene. Our Arizona scene has a strong community feel. It doesn’t matter who you are, whether you’re Dustin Latimer or a brand new 11 year old kid who just got his first pair of blades, we all skate together. We are very proud of our scene, and it was great to bring everyone together.

After the French Brothers arrived in a Stretch H3 Limo rolling in a 20 deep crew, it was then time to head into the theatre for the premiere.

Jon got up in front of the crowd before the movie started to say some quick “thank yous” and give a little speech when a phone call interrupted him. It was Cameron Talbot (full profile in the video), Jon held up his phone “say hi to cameron” – the whole theatre screamed, which was pretty cool for Cam. The mood was set, then the movie started.

Everyone was zoned in, watching a skate video on a huge theatre screen is always a treat. WAKE UP was amazing.

The movie got out, and all the skaters gathered in the lobby to discuss their favorite sections, tricks, and bs. The after-party was set at our friend DJ’s House in Tempe. We all re-grouped and gathered over there for the rest of the night.

Arizona legend Kevin Gillan made it out for the premiere. Kevin was visiting family over the Holiday. He lives in Cali with JC Rowe. I got the chance to session with Kevin at Tempe Skatepark. I asked him about his thoughts on being involved with the USD All-Star team. He’s really motivated, and looking forward to help re-build USD’s image. He has a lot of ideas, and is going to be heavily involved with USD on all levels. We’re looking forward to it.

Joey has a really amazing section in WAKE UP. It’s the ender section to close things out. Joey put it a lot of work for his section, and it definitely shows. I don’t know how, but Joey has raised the bar even higher this year. Joey skates at such a high level consistently, he’s no doubt becoming one of the top rollerbladers in our industry. We’ve proud of him, and will keep supporting his skating, and see that he keeps following his dream.

JB Snyder and Frank Picazzo did some art on a few of the pieces they’ve been working on at DJ’s House. It’s always sick watching these guys live, they are extremely talented.

Bama’s Matty Schrock flew out to Arizona for the premiere. Matty’s section is also insane, we really like Matty’s skating. He puts a lot of effort into the spots he chooses to skate, you can see it in his WAKE UP section. Overall, we’re really proud of Jon Jenkins for putting together an amazing video like WAKE UP. He followed his vision to portray skating in the best possible way, and raise the standard for quality in our industry. Jon is pushing rollerblading in the direction it needs to go with WAKE UP.
